Orthodontic/Orthopedic-Early Detection

Dear Patients,

As we anxiously anticipate the arrival of spring, Mother Nature continues to torment us with the blustery winter weather, reminding us we live in Cleveland, Ohio.

The concept of early orthodontic/orthopedics was developed in Europe in the 1930’s and 40’s. The philosophy is based on the fact that somewhere around 80% of facial growth and development occurs by the age of 8. Skeletal anomalies and or malformations in a child will cause orthodontic malformations in the adult dentition. The ability to diagnose and treat these orthodontic/orthopedic discrepancies can prevent more invasive and unstable treatment later in life. The importance of normal jaw relationship in the growing child can not be underestimated, as abnormal facial growth and development can have a restrictive effect on the airway. The inability to properly oxygenate will negatively impact the child’s heart, brain, and other organs. The old philosophy of waiting until all the child’s permanent teeth have erupted before any treatment is initiated, has been shown by countless studies to be flawed. The American Dental Association recommends that all children have an orthodontic/orthopedic screening by the age of 3. This allows the early diagnosis and treatment of major skeletal anomalies or defects.

Should you feel your child or someone you love have an orthodontic/orthopedic problem, please contact our office for a no charge consultation.

Sincerely,

Michael W. Dagostino, DDS
