“All that you are, is all that I’ll ever need” Ed Sheeran.

I previously wrote about the appropriate levels of benefits of vitamin D in preventing the life threating effects of Covid-19 infection. Recently the Cleveland Clinic revealed that melatonin usage was associated with a nearly 30% reduced likelihood of testing positive for Covid-19. Notably, the reduced likelihood of testing positive for Covid-19 increased from 30 to 52% for African Americans.
The internet is full of anecdotal recommendations about supplementing your diet with Vitamin C and Zinc. Although both of these supplements are important in our diets, there is no hard evidence to support Zinc or Vitamin C supplements can protect you from the Corona virus.
Zinc is the second most common trace mineral in our bodies. Zinc is an essential mineral that most Americans get plenty of in our diets. Zinc helps to strengthen the immune system and regulate our metabolism.
Vitamin C is also known as ascorbic acid, it’s an antioxidant that impacts our immune system. It has been shown that Vitamin C supplements don’t reduce the risk of getting a cold, but will reduce the severity and duration of the cold. Again, the most important defense against Covid-19 is to wash your hands, avoid touching your face, and avoid contact with anyone who is sick. I will be in line for the vaccine!

Sincerely,
Michael W. Dagostino DDS
