Wisdom Teeth Removal

Dear Patients,

Well, it looks like we can bid farewell to old man winter. The past winter was fortunately a mild one! It’s that time of year again, proms and weddings, and our receptionist Stephanie is about to take that walk down the aisle. Congratulations to Steph and Robert!!!

There are 32 teeth in the average adults dentition. In the last 40 years the average Americans’ jaws have shortened on the average of 7 mm per side. This shortening prevents our 3rd molars, or wisdom teeth, from being able to erupt into the oral cavity and becoming a functional part of our masticatory system. As a function of that, most teenagers are having their wisdom teeth removed. We recommend that the location and eruptive angle be evaluated around 15 years of age. Many research articles have reinforced the decision to prophylatically remove at a young age, citing minimal post operative complications in patients under the age of 21.

Should you or someone you love need to have wisdom teeth evaluated, please contact our office for a consultation.

Sincerely,

Michael W. Dagostino, D.D.S.
