In October I attended an educational seminar where the predominate theme was sleep disorders and their correlation with dental anomalies. Most people are unaware that sleep disorders can lead to high blood pressure, heart and kidney disease, strokes, diabetes, daytime sleepiness, and premature death. Obstructive sleep apnea, a form of sleep disorder, starts when blocked airways cause low levels of oxygen in the blood, known as hypoxia. Hypoxia interrupts breathing patterns and results in a broad range of chronic illnesses. Many of the patients that have sleep disorders are snorers, which is a clear signal that an airway is constricted. Children who snore can have significant facial growth changes as a result of the airway obstruction. Early diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders can significantly improve your quality of life. If you suspect that you or someone you love has a sleep disorder, please contact our office for an evaluation.
