“Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change” Stephen Hawkins.
Many patients have asked me is it normal for my jaw to click when I open. There is no simple answer to this complex question, but a clicking jaw means it is a diseased joint. The click is the result of the meniscus or disc being displaced from the head of the condyle and where the patient opens it clicks back on the condyle head.
Depending on what literature you read, incidence of clicking jaws is as high as 25% of the population. There are many neuro pathologic consequences of having a clicking jaw, some of them a minor annoyance, others are sufficient to cause a patient to want to have treatment. Our office recommends comprehensive TMD treatment if the disease has caused a change in the patient quality of life.
If you or someone you love has a clicking jaw and would like to discuss treatment options please call our office for a complimentary consultation.
Sincerely,
