Sealants for Young Children - Dr. Michael Dagostino, DDS

Sealants for Young Children

Newsletter for April 2009

Dear Patients,

It's April and snow is still flying in Cleveland. Tribe baseball is about to start, and our well loved Cars are making a run at an NBA Championship, can it get any better?

Having practiced over 25 yrs, I have seen a tremendous change in tooth decay. The advent of fluoridated water has had a very positive effect on lowering the cavity rate in the average patient. Simultaneously, the easy access of acidic carbonated beverages has created a population of patients with a very high cavity rate. In order to help prevent tooth decay on permanent teeth we recommend young children ( 6yrs of age and older) have sealants placed on their permanent back teeth.

Sealants are basically a protective paint placed on the biting surfaces of the back teeth that prevent the tooth decay "bugs" from reproducing in the tiny grooves and fissures found on these biting surfaces. The doctor or dental hygienist can place these painlessly and without Novocain.

As we celebrate Easter, Christ's death and resurrection, I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to Marge Lucas on the loss of her son, and to my webmaster, friend, and mentor Penny Tremblay on the loss of her father. Please keep Marge and Penny in your prayers during this holy week.

Sincerely,

Michael W. Dagostino, DDS
