Newsletter for May, 2014

Dear Patients,

“If you don’t build your dream, someone else will hire you to help them build theirs” Dhrubhai Ambani.

Recently there has been many news articles and politicians that are linking the heroin epidemic with the abuse of pharmaceutical narcotics. Recent changes in the State of Ohio laws restrict a Dentists’ ability to prescribe narcotics to patients, even those that are genuinely in need of pain medication. As a result of these changes, we are attempting to help patients deal with acute pain without the use of narcotics. For many of these patients the analgesic of choice is ibuprofen. This inexpensive, over the counter medication can help by relieving the pain and swelling of many dental maladies. There are times when even 600-800 mg of ibuprofen is still not enough. In these cases we recommend those patients take 500mg Tylenol (acetaminophen), right along with the ibuprofen. These drugs work in synergy because they are completely different drug families. They can be safely taken together as long as proper dosages are followed. It is possible to safely take up to 4000 mg (8) Tylenols, in one day along with 3,200 mg of Ibuprofen. Clinical studies show this drug combination to be as effective in pain relief as 45mg hydrocodone ( 6 Vicodin ES ) in a day.

Should you or someone you love have questions regarding the use of non narcotic analgesics in pain relief, please contact our office at 440-842-2171

Sincerely,

Michael W. Dagostino, DDS
