Interceptive Orthodontic

Interceptive Orthodontic

Newsletter for May, 2013

Dear Patients,

“One day your life will flash before your eyes. Make sure it’s worth watching.” Unknown source

Parents of young children often ask what the earliest age that we can do interceptive orthodontics is. I have personally treated many children as young as 2 ˝. There are 7 reasons where I would treat a child as soon as I diagnose their problem.

1. Anterior open bite( front teeth don’t touch)
2. Posterior cross bite( back upper teeth are on the inside of lowers)
3. Anterior cross bite(upper front teeth are behind lower front teeth)
4. Object habit( thumb sucker; pacifier habit past 2 years of age)
5. Functional shift( lower jaw deviates to right or left on closure)
6. Class III(lower jaw in advance of upper jaw)
7. Tongue thrust(when patient swallows, their tongue comes forward to create a lip seal)

Should your child have 1 or more of these problems it is important to not delay early treatment.

Sincerely,

Michael W. Dagostino, DDS
