What's a Biopsy?

What's a Biopsy?

Newsletter for July 2011

July 2011

Dear Patients,

Summer is finally here, with many happy graduates ready to embark on a new phase of life. Good luck to all! On another note, our beloved Indians are battling the lowly Tigers for first place, yea!

Recently a patient asked me what exactly is a biopsy? A biopsy is the removal of a sample of tissue for the purpose of diagnosis. In the case of oral biopsies the suspect tissue is removed via an incision (excisional biopsy) or with a transepithelial brush (brush biopsy). This tissue is then sent to a pathology lab where it is evaluated for the presence or absence of abnormal cells. The surgical site is generally sutured and reevaluated one week post surgical treatment. Our office performs biopsies on suspect tissue on a routine basis and we are very proactive in recommending biopsies on any and all unusual appearing tissue.

Should you or someone you love have an oral lesion that you would like evaluated please contact our office for a complimentary evaluation.

Sincerely,

Michael W. Dagostino, DDS
